The Boulevard location (Castor Avenue) has 16 lanes, while the Holme Avenue location has 36. This is exactly what you’d imagine an old-school bowling alley in the Northeast would look like, times two. North Bowl / Photograph by George Widman for GPTMC Thunderbird Lanes ![]() Fridays and Saturdays: $50 per lane, per hour for up to six people. Reservations are required to bowl here no walk-ins accepted.Ĭost: Weekdays: $5 per person, per game, plus $4 per person for shoe rentals. Another plus: You can feel good about bowling here because you’ll be supporting Programs Employing People (PEP), which helps provide employment and other support services to people with developmental disabilities in the Philadelphia area. They’ve only got six lanes, but they’re much more affordable than their flashy counterparts - and you can bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol). If sleek, massive, new-school bowling alleys are just not what you’re looking for, head to the tiny vintage PEP Bowl, whose website tells me their facility dates back to the 1950s. There’s also a bar and food menu (no surprises here: pizza, fries, wings and ice cream).Ĭost: $11 per person, per hour, plus $4 per person for shoe rentals.ġ001 Market Street, suite 3010, Center City. Taking up over 60,000 square feet of the former Gallery II space, Round1 has 14 lanes of bowling, along with over 250 arcade games as well as billiards, ping-pong, darts and karaoke. One of the newest spots on the list, Round1 moved into the third floor of the Fashion District just before the pandemic happened, so it feels even newer than it is. Lanes are first-come, first-served no reservations (aside from private events).Ĭost: $7-$8 per person per game (cash only), plus $5 per person for shoe rentals.ġ9 East Oregon Avenue, South Philly. After 9 p.m., South Bowl is 21-and-older only. Kids are welcome (with an adult) before 9 p.m., and they even offer bumpers and ramps to make it easier for little ones. ![]() The fun continues outside with a roof deck and the seasonal Yard - an outdoor space with its own bar and lounge, as well as two 40-foot-long bocce ball courts, shuffleboard, pool, and slow- and fast-pitch batting cages. The similarly massive bi-level complex houses bowling lanes (including two potential private bowling areas for parties), billiards, darts, retro arcade games plus two full bars and a menu with pizzas, tacos, and other crowd-pleasing snacks. But instead of a mechanic’s in Northern Liberties, South Bowl’s retro aesthetic took over a cold-storage warehouse. In case the similar name didn’t tip you off, this is North Bowl’s younger sister who lives in South Philly (and likes to play lawn games). ![]() South Bowl / Photograph by Laura Swartz South Bowl Lanes are first-come, first-served no reservations (aside from private events).Ĭost: $7-$8 per person, per game, plus $5 per person for shoe rentals.ĩ09 North 2nd Street, Northern Liberties. After 9 p.m., North Bowl is 21-and-older only. In addition to the full menu, there are two full-sized bars, as well as a third seasonal outdoor bar, the Lot Bar. North Bowl boasts 17 bowling lanes (13 on the main floor, plus four upstairs if you want to rent out a private party), plus billiards, foosball, air hockey, arcade games, pinball, and a vintage photo booth. (It was the mid-2000s - just the beginning of Northern Liberties being called up-and-coming.) The retro-chic vibes, the tater tots, it was all very exciting. Quickly following Lucky Strike in the summer of 2006, North Bowl took over a former auto mechanic’s garage in NoLibs and became a reason to visit the neighborhood. Families are welcome on Sundays for Family Bowl - even better if you can time it with a Rock and Roll Playhouse concert featuring classic rock (think: Beatles, Bowie, Prince) and kids’ activities to get the whole family jamming.Ĭost: $25-$30 per lane (up to eight people), plus $5 per person for shoe rentals. From live music to DJ sets, Brooklyn Bowl has a full schedule of entertainment. ![]() Plus, you can order Blue Ribbon fried chicken from downstairs to enjoy in your sofa lounge as you bowl. Upstairs, you’ll find 24 lanes of bowling, plus a concert stage and bar serving up beer, cocktails, and even a boozy milkshake. This year’s Best of Philly winner for “new school” bowling alley, Brooklyn Bowl combines bowling with a live music venue, complete with a bar and restaurant. You have a lot of choices around Philly: From old-school lanes that seem frozen in the 1960s to new-school, retro-chic spots with food and cocktails, here are 10 spots to go to when you want to knock down 10 pins. Collier’s Weekly Magazine did an 8-part special on the Mars Project in 1952, captivating the world’s imagination. And an English version was published a few years later. In 1952, this appendix was published in Germany as “Das Marsproject”, or “The Mars Project”. The novel itself was never published, because it was terrible, but it also contained a detailed appendix containing all the calculations, mission parameters, hardware designs to carry out this mission to Mars. Army/ Ordway Collection/Space Rocket Centerīefore the work really took off, though, Von Braun had a couple of years of relative downtime, and in 19, he wrote a science fiction novel about the human exploration of Mars. In “Operation Paperclip”, the German scientists were captured and transferred to the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico, where they would begin working on the US rocket efforts. They were developed in 1942, and by 1944 they were being used in war against Allied targets.īy the end of the war, Von Braun coordinated his surrender to the Allies as well as 500 of his engineers, including their equipment and plans for future rockets. These unmanned rockets could carry a 1-tonne payload 800 kilometers away. Von Braun was originally a German rocket scientist, pivotal to the Nazi “rocket team”, which developed the ballistic V-2 rockets. Credit: NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center It was under Von Braun’s guidance that NASA developed the various flight hardware for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions including the massive Saturn V rocket, which eventually put a human crew of astronauts on the Moon and safely returned them back to Earth. In the past, distributing a new music album would have required millions of dollars of investment in recording, manufacturing and distribution. This can be incredibly disruptive to an economy. Digital products do not rely on scarce resources. The economy of abundance is almost always present in the digital world-digital products and content are easy and cheap to copy, store, and transfer to millions. ![]() Unlike the economy of scarcity, the economy of abundance is built on the availability of near unlimited resources. The Economy of AbundanceĪbundance refers to having ample resources. Scarcity keeps prices high and helps drive profitability. Historically, most organizations have operated within the economy of scarcity, relying on limited resources to create products and meet consumer demand. This is why marketing campaigns often try to create artificial scarcity for a particular product in order to increase demand. Equally, if the supply is large or seemingly unlimited, the perceived value tends to fall. If the supply is low and demand is high, the perceived value (and product price) will tend to rise. In economic terms, the scarcity principle explains the relationship between perceived value, supply and demand. This poses unique challenges for organizations that rely on scarce resources like water or skilled labor. There is a mismatch between the desired supply and the actual supply. If a resource is scarce, but demand is high, not everyone can get what they want. The economic theory of scarcity refers to a mismatch between limited resources and consumer demand. The economy of scarcity and the economy of abundance are important concepts when discussing this transformation. Industries and institutions are interested in transformation not only for technological advancement but also for digitalization’s economic impact. Differences Between the Economies of Scarcity and Abundance Understanding economic scarcity versus abundance in digital transformation will help business leaders, engineers, and other stakeholders unlock new innovation possibilities. This economic growth comes with a set of advantages and disadvantages that all involved parties need to be aware of. The shift from the economy of atoms to the economy of bits is disrupting many organizations. ![]() Economic Scarcity versus Abundance in Digital Transformation When it comes to drywall and plaster, liquid starch can cause some minor damage if it is left on the wall too long. In general, liquid starch can damage some walls in certain cases. It depends on the walls you are referring to, as different types of walls are susceptible to different types of damage. If you’d like a more reliable method, consider using a wallpaper paste. Overall, while you can use starch as a wallpaper adhesive, it isn’t the best choice and not recommended by professionals. Once the wallpaper is up, use a damp cloth to press and push out any excess starch and bubbles. Once it is saturated, attach the wallpaper to the wall with a smoothing tool. Stir until it is completely dissolved and then fill a spray bottle with the solution and apply it to the wall or the back of the wallpaper. To use starch as a wallpaper adhesive, mix the desired amount of cornstarch with warm water. ![]() Starch isn’t a long-term solution and won’t last as long as a commercial grade adhesive so using a more reliable adhesive like wallpaper paste is a better option. If you’re looking for a wallpaper adhesive, you should consider using a professional grade adhesive or wallpaper paste made specifically for wallpapering. It is advisable to check the manufacturer’s instructions before applying any type of adhesive. It is important to note that many wallpapers are not created with starch and could become damaged when applied with a starch solution. Starch works as an adhesive but it won’t adhere to some materials like fresh paint and textured surfaces. It is more of an opt-in choice than an industry standard. Yes, you can use starch for wallpaper but it isn’t a traditional method. Lastly, it is important to monitor the fabric starch as it dries to ensure it is secure and will not shift or come loose. It is important to use fabric starch designed for walls, as wall fabric starch will dry faster and provide better adhesion. Once the fabric is hung, finishing touches can be added using glitter, fabric paint, or any other decorations. Some people choose to use the corners of the canvas to create a pattern, while others prefer to leave the edges loose and hang the fabric from dowel rods. ![]() Once the fabric starch is affixed to the wall, it can be trimmed and styled as desired. Place the canvas against the wall, lightly pressing to secure, and then use a hammer and nails to attach the fabric starch to the wall at the points marked with the measuring tape. Using a measuring tape, mark points where the top, center, and bottom of the fabric starch will attach to the wall. ![]() The canvas should be spread out and secured on the floor, or a large level surface, with the fabric starch side up. The fabric starch should be applied using a foam brush or a spray bottle. How to Turn On or Off Clipboard History on Windows 11 or 10 (Registry Editor)? I don't mean to knock on React or modern frameworks, they have their uses and fill needs, but the end result often isn't a pleasant experience. It feels like one of those hip, new, modern, chunky sites that take too long to load and I try not to revisit. I don't doubt they have a modern front-end. The client side bloat I've noticed are both in visual clutter and performance using the Atlassian hosted version.so I doubt it's related to Java (outside of maybe scaling issues?). In my own experience, managing Java applications have their own set of skills. The only way it'd slow down the client is if your server was poorly tuned or underpowered. ![]() Other comments in this thread mention competitors using other server-side languages that can be served from a RaspberryPi. I may not have been clear, Java was only really relevant for hosting onsite. (This is where having the ability to fall back to PSTN to join a call comes in very handy: if I'm in a coffee shop with a crappy connection, there's a strong chance that my call will be of poor quality so I join with my cell phone instead.) Real-time media (audio/video) is very sensitive to delay, jitter, congestion and all the network stuff that normally goes un-noticed with web browsing, and there are still plenty of cases that just can't be covered by error correction. I work in the Cisco Spark team so I'm not unbiased when it comes to Skype but you might have a quality problem on your network connection (and the other participants' connections too) if you're seeing consistent audio issues. Lately I've noticed web browers being a bit on the aggressive side when setting up connections and that disturbs the flow of packets for some video/audio connections. There are many factors that affect call quality and you can optimize for resillience against some while getting bitten by others. This will be hard to do because it depends on your definition of quality. (I've not put Jitsi through its paces - would love to know how Jitsi handles the UX around dropped packets.) Or they implicitly blame outside factors ("we can't fix the network") rather than helping customers live with the realities of the internet ("we show you immediately and in real-time when the network isn't what you expect"). I don't think this is an "easy" problem to solve, but it's one that I think most video chat services seem to pretend doesn't exist. This could be as simple as "last transmission received N ms ago" indicator or something, but I'm sure there are more clever solutions. ![]() There are natural pauses in any conversation, and if you're always wondering whether the pause is natural or a result of a few dropped packets, it makes for a very un-natural conversation. I wish video-chat services/clients would be totally up-front about the real-time quality of the connection. You can't blame Zoom for every dropped packet, but what it doesn't do well is tell you when packets are dropped. But there's still moments of dropped packets and confusion. ![]() I think zoom is the best for 1:1 and group chats after trying a number of such services. |
